Graduation is an exciting time for students to celebrate all they have achieved over many years and months of hard work and study. At Laureate Australia, we seek to ensure that our graduation ceremonies are a special time for our students and their guests.
Laureate Australia hosts annual graduation ceremonies in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. Students who have successfully completed their studies at Torrens University Australia and Think Education colleges are invited to attend the ceremony in their nearest state.
Graduation is a big event that can be very daunting for first-time graduates. On the day, there will be a rehearsal so you will know what to do when your time comes to accept your award. Our helpful graduation staff will also be on hand to direct you through each step of the ceremony so that you can enjoy the day. Even so, it is important to familiarise yourself with the proceedings beforehand. This guide contains useful information about your graduation ceremony to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible.
Graduation ceremonies are formal proceedings, and all graduands are gowned in academic regalia appropriate for their award, with varying styles and colours dependant on the field of study. Graduands are seated by course and in alphabetical order. There is a lot of waiting and we ask for your patience while students are registered, gowned and seated. After the ceremony graduands and their guests are invited to join us for celebratory refreshments and photographs.
To be eligible to graduate at a Laureate Australia graduation ceremony, you will need to successfully complete all course requirements, have no outstanding fees or outstanding library loans.
Students who are eligible to graduate will have their results academically assessed against the course requirements to confirm eligibility for the award.

In accordance with ASQA regulations, vocational students assessed as completing all requirements of their course will be issued with their graduating documents within 30 days of assessment. Vocational graduates are invited to attend their next upcoming annual graduation ceremony.
If your current visa is due to expire before your graduation date or you have international guests wishing to attend, please contact the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (www.immi.gov.au) to find out more information. For any required documentation, please contact your Student Services team.
When graduating, it is important that your information is up to date. If your details are incorrect we may need to reissue your official graduation documents, which may incur a fee. Please log on to your Student Portal and ensure that all of your personal details are correct:
Full legal name – This is the name that will appear on your testamur and graduation documents
Email – Your graduation invitation will be sent to this email address
Address – This is to ensure you are invited to the correct graduation ceremony
Phone – This is in case we need to contact you
If you have completed your studies and would like to confirm your details, please contact your Student Services team.
You will receive your invitation to the graduation ceremony by email four weeks prior to the event. The invitation will contain a link to record your RSVP response. Please RSVP by the date on the invitation. If you do not, you will be recorded as graduating in absentia.
You will be able to register yourself and 2 guests (including Regalia Hire). Additional guest tickets can also be purchased.
Graduands participating are required to wear the appropriate academic dress. Upon arrival, graduands will be directed to the gowning area to collect their academic regalia. Graduation ceremonies are formal events. Please ensure you wear appropriate attire underneath your gown. Smart casual dress is recommended.
Students are expected to return their academic dress to the staff in the gowning area within an hour after the conclusion of the ceremony, otherwise, you will be charged for the cost of the gown.
Footwear - Please note that the graduation venue has varied surfaces and there are a number of ramps and stairs to negotiate during the ceremony, so please wear appropriate footwear.
Thongs are not permitted.
Student registration will open two hours prior to the ceremony start time. Only students will be permitted to register at this time. During this time students will be registered, gowned and attend a short rehearsal. Please note, guests are not permitted to attend the rehearsal.
Go to the registration desk upon arrival. Students will need to provide photo identification to register for their ceremony and hire their academic dress. To ensure a stress-free experience, please arrive early and register at the time noted on your graduation invitation.
Please note - students who have not arrived within one hour prior to the ceremony commencement may not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Guest registration will open 30 minutes prior the ceremony start time. The venue will not be open to guests until this time.
Guests: Please do not make travel arrangements for your guests until you have registered yourself and the number of guests attending.
Guests must be in their seats 10 minutes before the ceremony starts.
Special Requirements - If you require wheelchair access or mobility assistance, please let us know when you RSVP.
Children are welcome to attend the graduation ceremony and should be supervised at all times. Children requiring a seat will need a ticket.
For graduands with children, you will be unable to sit with your children during the ceremony and they cannot join you on-stage to receive your award. If you would like your children to attend, please organise a family member or friend to supervise them during the ceremony. As infants and small children can get restless during the ceremony your courtesy is appreciated in ensuring they do not disturb others.
Please note, prams are not admitted inside the hall and should be left in the foyer during the ceremony. As guest seating is not allocated, please arrive early to secure seats near the aisles and exits so they can leave the ceremony if necessary.
The cost for hire of Academic Regalia is $40.00 per student and must be paid when you RSVP for the event.
All students are required to wear the appropriate academic regalia, which will be available for collection on the day.
You may RSVP for yourself and two guests. If you wish to bring additional guests, tickets can be purchased at a cost of $35.00 each and are subject to availability as seating is limited.
At any time you may opt to graduate in absentia. Your award will be conferred at the next Academic Board meeting and graduation documents will be issued within 30 days. Student Services can advise you of upcoming Academic Board dates.
If you cannot attend the graduation ceremony, you can also select to graduate in absentia. Your award will be conferred at the graduation ceremony and official graduation documents will be mailed to you within 30 days of the ceremony.
If you do not respond by the RSVP date, you will graduate in absentia.
A professional photographer will be available on the day to take photos during the ceremony. There will also be an opportunity for professional photos with your guests for one hour after the ceremony’s conclusion. Photographs will be available for purchase through the photographer’s website.
Photos are not permitted during the ceremony. There will be an opportunity to take photos in the foyer areas after the ceremony concludes.
Laureate Australia staff will also be taking photographs for use in Laureate Australia publications and promotional materials. You should advise Laureate Australia staff if you do not wish for your photograph to be used for these purposes.
Light refreshments will be provided after the graduation ceremony and we invite you and your guests to stay and celebrate your achievements with us.
What happens now?
When will I get my testamur (certificate)?
Higher Education (HE) awards are conferred at the Graduation Ceremony. HE students may opt to graduate in absentia and have their awards conferred at the next scheduled Academic Board meeting. Students who graduate in absentia will not be invited to attend a future Graduation Ceremony.
HE students who do not participate in a Graduation Ceremony will graduate in absentia and their testamur posted to their postal address on file within 30 calendar days after the ceremony.
Students participating in a Graduation Ceremony must wear the academic dress prescribed and comply with all ceremony requirements. Student awards (e.g. Academic Excellence Awards) are presented during the Graduation Ceremony to students who meet published criteria.
